1st US Train Robbery

Frank, Simeon, and William Reno committed the first US train robbery. On October 6, 1866, the Reno brothers boarded an eastbound train in Indiana wearing masks and toting guns. After emptying one safe and tossing the other out the window, the robbers jumped off the train and made an easy getaway.

1st woman US mayor

Susan M. Salter became the 1st woman US mayor during those days when women popularly settle home with their cardigan sweaters. She won by a two-thirds majority but didn't even know she was in the running until she went into the voting booth. Her name was submitted by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She died at the age of 101 in 1961.

1st Woman to Receive a US Medal of Honor

Mary Walker was the 1st (and only) woman to receive the US Medal of Honor. She was a Civil War surgeon. Her medal was rescinded in 1916, however, when the Army purged its files to cut down on what they thought were "unwarranted" issues. It wasn't re-instated until 1976.

1st to attempt President's Assassination

Richard Lawrence is the 1st known person to attempt to assassinate an American President. On January 30, 1835, President Andrew Jackson was attending the funeral of South Carolina congressman Warren R. Davis. Lawrence fired two pistols at point-blank range. Both misfired.

Who is William Blount?

William Blount is the 1st person in the US to be impeached by the House of Representatives, the first time it even exercised this power, and was simultaneously expelled from the US Senate on July 8. He was found guilty 'of a high misdemeanor, entirely inconsistent with his public trust and duty as a Senator,' because he had been active in a plan to incite the Creek and Cherokee Indians to aid the British in conquering the Spanish territory of West Florida.

Think Michelob is a Best Buy? Michelob was invented during a brewer's strike in the 1930s from a recipe tossed together by the untrained workers left behind to run the brewery. It was so bad local taverns tossed their delivered barrels in the gutter until the streets ran with beer. When the strike was over, the brewery didn't want to lose all that beer, no matter how bad, so they repackaged it and sold it as Michelob.
