Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty in New York marks the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and was given as a gift and token of friendship by the French people to the people of the United States in 1886. Why did the people of France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States? It is said that the people who first thought about the idea wanted to give a great monument to the people of America as a lasting memorial to independence showing that the people of France is also amenable to the idea of human liberty. Interestingly, the Statue of Liberty was not paid for by the French government. The statue was paid for by the french people through donations and not by the people's tax.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the more popularly recognized icons of the United States and obviously one of the most visited tourist structures in the country. You can go shopping in the Big Apple for a Samsung TV but no tourist visit in New York City would seem to be complete without a visit to the world renowned structure.
