High School Student Discovers Microbe that Eats Plastic

A 16 year old student at the Waterloo Collegiate Institute in Ontario won the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa when he presented his research on microorganisms that can biodegrade plastic. Plastics usually take around 1000 years to decompose but Daniel Burd's research on microorganisms that speed up plastic decomposition shows that a 43% degradation of plastic in just a matter of six weeks is possible.

500 billion plastic bags are reportedly made each year and are used in a variety of industries. You even use a plastic bag when you buy several types of the best diet pill.

Toddler Bids on a $12,300 Item Online

Young children these days are not just capable of using the mouse to do an IT job search, they can even bid and win auctioned items online.

A three year old toddler from New Zealand went online shopping while her mom was napping and made a winning bid on a huge earth-moving digger worth $12,300.

Pipi Quinland's mom was bidding for toys online before sleeping only to find out that her daughter made a bid and won a big and expensive item from the auction site TradeMe. She immediately contacted the TradeMe and the seller to explain what happened. Fortunately, the auction site reimbursed the seller's costs for the auction and the item was relisted.

Elixir of Eternal Youth Finally Found?

For years, many women have been seeking for best acne treatment and the best anti ageing creams and scientists claimed to have found what can potentially become the elixir of eternal youth, the protein telomerase.

Tolemerase is extracted from the plant astragalus which is commonly used in Chinese medicine. The protein protects DNA strands in chromosomes from thinning out and thus help in slowing down the process of aging.

Aging Research
A team of researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Centre in Madrid genetically engineered mice to produce 10 times the normal levels of this protein and they lived 50 percent longer that the normal mice.

More research is however needed before telomerase can be marketed commercially particularly because boosting the levels of telomerase increases risks of cancer.

Soft Drinks, Diabetes and Obesity

In a study conducted on 91,249 women who were followed for eight years, it was found that those who drink one or more soft drinks a day were twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who only drink soft drinks less than once per month. Researchers therefore believe that there is a strong link between soda drink consumption and type 2 diabetes.

Studies also show a linkage between softdrinks and obesity so if you don't want to be fat, hit your
treadmill regularly and limit your soft drinks intake.
