The first ever greenhouse gas monitoring satellite was launched in a small island in Japan on January 23, 2009.
The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) also referred to as Ibuki in Japanese will measure the densities of carbon dioxide and methane from more than 50,000 locations in the earth's atmosphere. Japan's Ministry of the Environment and National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) will reportedly use the data gathered by the satellite to track one of the gases that cause greenhouse effect. The data will also be shared to NASA but not directly to truck rental companies.
